NICS are not detected traffic on an ESXi host

 

Recently, we have encountered ESXi hosts that are not responding due to gateways that are not available on physical NICs assigned to vmkernal ports.

As I began troubleshooting, I received no ping response. As I logged into the Dell console page, I looked into it further. There is no hung or PSOD problem.

I've noticed that a few NICs are experiencing the problem. We began troubleshooting by doing each step one at a time.

> login console session (ALT + F1) and enable shell if disabled state.

> # esxcfg-nics -l

> # esxcli network nic list ( same result).

ESXTOP command can help vmk0( mgmt) network are connected to which physical NIC.

# esxtop

# press n --> it redirected to NIC's details.

> Tried to ping gateway not reachable.

># ping 10.xx.xx.1X

> # esxcfg-route -l  ( To get gateway details)

We validating the Traffic on specific NIC.

> # pktcap-uw --uplink vmnic0 --dir 0 --proto 0x11 -o - |tcpdump-uw -ner -

We observed that traffic is not passing through NIC. Hence Disable and enable the NIC.

# esxcli network nic down -n vmnicX

# esxcli network nic up -n vmnicX

Issue has been fixed after re-enabled the NIC on esxi host.
