vSphere replication-A general system error occurred: PBM error occurred during PreReconfigureCallback: Fault cause: vmodl.fault.SystemError

This article describes how to troubleshooting the issue.

Issue: A general system error occurred: PBM error occurred during PreReconfigureCallback: Fault cause: vmodl.fault.SystemError

Stage: This error at getting at stage 'create writable storage snapshot '

Recently I encountered the issue, while performing the disaster recovery plan recovery completed.

When we re-protecting the VM getting this issue.

Workaround solution:

> The VM has been stuck recovered state.

> Remove the VM and select "select seeds"

> Reconfigure the VM DR site to protection site.

> VM will sync and Protection groups and recovery plan group will complete after completed the sync.

Permanent solution:

As per the logs, our vmdk files are upper case like (.VMDK) it should be lower case.

> HBR (vSphere replica) doesn't support upper case vmdk files.

for example (os.VMDK) it should be (os.vmdk)

How to Convert vmdk files Uppercase to lower case.

> Remove the VM from vSphere replication side (Don't choose seeds now)

> it should be clean up entire storage.

> Reconfigure the VM again.

> It's working now after modified the vmdk files.
