I recently faced the issue. When I applied the patches on esxi host though life cycle manager its getting on below error. There are two methods to apply the patch on esxi hosts. Make sure before start the activity. put into Esxi host maintenance mode.
" The host returns esxupdate error codes: -1. Check the Lifecycle Manager log fil"
Task Name
Stage patches to entity
Status
The host returns esxupdate error codes: -1. Check the Lifecycle Manager log file
Tried rescan compliances option in Life cycle manager and reboot the esxi host also but didn't work.
So I uploaded the Esxi patch zip file into respective datastore and go to datastore to view the files.
Using esxcli with the install method has the possibility of overwriting existing drivers. Below command
to review the list of available images/files
esxcli software sources profile list -d /vmfs/volumes/datastore1/ESXi510-201212001.zip
